Disrupted Derby: NPFL fines Enyimba, Rangers, awards 3 points to Rangers

The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) has fined Enyimba FC and some of the club’s players ₦10m following their part in the abandonment of the top-of-the-table fixture against Rangers in Enugu on Sunday.
Similarly, Rangers have received a fine of ₦5m for various breaches. Enugu Rangers was fined over poor arrangement for the match, especially for over-ticketing, breach of stadium security and poor crowd control.
Recall that Enyimba players staged a walkout following a penalty call awarded to hosts Rangers with the score at 0-0 in during last Sunday's match at Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium. Enyimba players and supporters argued that the .penalty was given in stoppage time.
Protesting the decision, some of the Enyimba players harassed match officials. The disorderly behaviour led to pitch invasion by Enyimba fans. Security arrangement has been said to be inadequate.
The letter
A letter to Enyimba dated June 10, 2024, and signed by the NPFL Chief Operating Officer, Davidson Owumi, the league body listed the breaches of its rules by Enyimba, which brought the game into disrepute.
In the letter, The NPFL said Enyimba violated Rule C9 by failing to ensure the proper conduct of their players, officials, and supporters.
The club was also cited for breaching Rule B6.23, which is disrupting the transmission of a live broadcast.
The league governing body also ordered Enyimba, to identify and produce the players namely Chibuike Nwaiwu (jersey No. 27), Eze Ekwutoziam (Jersey No. 6) and Elijah Akanni (Jersey No. 10) for investigation and appropriate sanctions.
With three points and three goals awarded to Enugu Rangers, the Flying Antelopes now have 64 points, ahead of second-placed Enyimba and third-placed Remo Stars both on 59 points.
Enyimba have been given 48 hours to appeal the decisions.
