The Labour Party caucus of  South East Houses of Assembly has urged the Federal Government, led by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to release Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

The meeting said his release would help check criminal activities in the  South East region that has persisted in the guise of genuine agitation.

Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra, IPOB, has been held in detention despite Court rulings ordering his release.

Speaking in Awka, the leader of the caucus and member representing Onitsha South 11 Constituency in Anambra State House of Assembly, Honorable Jude Umennajiego said they are joining their voice together with prominent Nigerians such as elder statesman, Chief Edwin Clerk, Mr. Peter Obi, among others to ask for the release of Mazi Kanu to bring about sustainable peace in the South East region.

The group also called on South East Governors to grant financial autonomy to State Houses of Assembly in respect to the principles of separation of power, making each arm of government independent to function effectively, as enshrined in the constitution and also as an executive order signed by former President Muhammadu Buhari.

On the lingering impasse between the Federal Government and organized labour on reaching an agreement over minimum age, the caucus called for a quick resolution of the impasse, with the government bearing in mind the high cost of goods and services, which the current income of workers cannot carry the cost of living.

The also called on the National Judiciary Council to review the sentencing of Honorable Bright Ngene of Enugu state alleging that his trial was hastily done and seem politically motivated, as he was a candidate for a rerun election in Enugu state.
