The Ebonyi State Government has embarked on a significant partnership with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) aimed at revitalizing the Nkalagu Cement Industry (NIGERCEM) and constructing a new railway line to enhance regional connectivity. This railway will link Ebonyi State with Onitsha in Anambra State and Port Harcourt in Rivers State.
Governor Francis Nwifuru disclosed this strategic initiative during his participation in the Tunisia-Africa Investment and Trade Conference held in Tunis, Tunisia. According to a statement by Mr. Leo Oketa, the special assistant to the governor on New Media, the Governor had fruitful discussions with EBRD delegates on the sidelines of the conference.
The EBRD is a reputable European institution known for fostering the transition towards open, market-oriented economies and promoting private and entrepreneurial initiatives. Governor Nwifuru sought the bank's partnership not only for the revitalization of NIGERCEM but also for other key development projects across Ebonyi State.
“This meeting was a baby step to many others yet to come. It clearly points to the governor’s foresight for the economic development of Ebonyi State,” Mr. Oketa remarked, emphasizing the governor's vision and commitment to transforming the state's economic landscape.
This partnership is expected to bring substantial economic benefits to the region, enhancing industrial productivity and improving transportation infrastructure, which is crucial for the state's growth and integration into larger economic systems.
In related news, the conference in Tunis saw various African leaders and international stakeholders converge to discuss investment and trade opportunities, underscoring the importance of international collaboration in driving development across the continent. Governor Nwifuru’s proactive engagement at the conference highlights Ebonyi State’s readiness to attract and leverage international partnerships for sustainable development.
