The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics has issued a two-week ultimatum to the Federal Government in respect of alleged violation of Polytechnic Act, alleged interference of NBTE on HND admission as well as non resolution of various long standing issues affecting the polytechnic sector.
➡️The ultimatum begins on October 7, 2024, and ends on October 25, 2024. If unresolved, this primary step in the process of industrial dispute could result in industrial action.
➡️ASUP warns that if these issues are not resolved within this period, we will consider various forms of trade disputes, including a possible withdrawal of services by our members nationwide.
➡️The union also urges its local chapters and zones to prepare for protests, media campaigns, and other peaceful actions during this period.
➡️ASUP National President, Shammah Kpanja, revealed this as part of the National Executive Council holding in Abuja.
➡️ASUP frowned at the alleged violations of the Federal Polytechnics Act and other governing laws in Polytechnics, which negatively affect the appointment of key administrative officers in both federal and state-owned polytechnics in Nigeria.
Education Minister, Prof Tahir Mamman
ASUP President indicated the lack of review of the “Schemes of Service for Polytechnics,” as well as the failure to release updated conditions of service for polytechnic staff as part of the issues at stake.
Also on the the front burners of dispute is the issue of the Federal Government’s failure to disburse the second tranche of the NEEDS Assessment intervention funds, a long-standing financial commitment to enhance the education sector. Recall that NEEDS Assessment was featured in previous ASUP strikes over ten years ago.
ASUP also condemned interference by the National Board for Technical Education in the admission process for Higher National Diploma students, a function traditionally reserved for polytechnic academic boards.
ASUP also criticised the omission of academic allowances in the national budget, particularly in respect of the the expected changes relating to the Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System
As part of the current grievances, ASUP also criticised state-owned polytechnics for failing to implement the agreed 35%/25% salary increase and the Federal Government’s delay in releasing the related arrears.
ASUP President, Shammah S. Kpanja
ASUP warns that if these issues are not resolved within this period, we will consider various forms of trade disputes, including a possible withdrawal of services by our members nationwide.
