Nigerians, police count losses as protests turn violent in cities

Nigerians and police authorities are counting losses as protests turned violent in some cities.
At a press conference in Abuja, IGP Egbetokun Adeolu disclosed the murder of a policeman on duty.
The #EndBadGovernance protests turned violent in Abuja, Kano, Borno, Yobe and Nasarawa states, where rampaging hoodlums burned vehicles and looted warehouses and private stores.
In Gwarinpa, along the Abuja-Kaduna Highway, protesters turned violent at about midday by attacking passersby, motorists taking over the service lane at Dawaki opposite the Abuja Model City Gate. Armed with cudgels, sharps stones, sticks and other dangerous items, the young men and so mmirikweonwae underaged pursued anyone they came across.
In some instances, policemen were seen dispersing protesters using tear gas, even as civil society organisations condemned the action of the police. Curfews have been imposed in Kano, Borno, Yobe and Nasarawa states
The protest is not without other social consequences as prices of food and basic commodities have gone higher than the protesters met them in the last months.
The current economic crises is believed to have been ignited by the government’s twin policies of petrol subsidy removal and unification of forex windows.
The nationwide protest which is propagated mainly on social media, against economic hardship started on Thursday, August 1, 2024. The protest is scheduled to last till August 10.
In some states such as Anambra, residents have boycotted the protest. However, business activities are a lull stage as banks were closed in most cities.
It’s expected that government will provide more engagement with the youths and other stakeholders aimed at ameliorating the harsh economic conditions.
