Counsels to detained IPOB leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu have lamented the continued detention of Kanu by the DSS. The lawyers who thanked the press for keeping the struggle alive, said it was almost like an opportunity lost to bring immediate peace to the southeast. The lawyers spoke to the press shortly after the court session on Tuesday.
The counsels asserted that the Supreme Court had given the lower court an opportunity to bring peace to the south east but unfortunately, "they are toying with that opportunity." Part of the statements reads:
"All that the lower court needed to do was to was to go back to the ruling of the Supreme Court and give back the bail it had previously withdrawn and you will see absolute peace in the south east. With what happened today,
"Iit's obvious that certain people don't want peace to return to southeast. And we implore members of the public to interrogate why the decision of Supreme Court of December 15 will not be complied by a federal high court. We need the federal high court to obey the orders of a superior court."
Kanu's first arrest
Kanu was arrested first on October 14, 2015 on 11-count charge bordering on terrorism. He was later granted bail after two years detention in Abuja prison.
Kanu disappeared in 2017 when his home was attacked in 2017 apparently for fear of his life. Many people were said to have died in that operation. Mr Kanu was widely reported to have fled the country in September 2017 on safety grounds after an invasion of his home by the military in Afara-Ukwu, near Umuahia, Abia State.
The Nigerian government obtained a court order on September 20, 2017, to designate IPOB a terrorist group and to proscribe it.
The rearrest
The leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, was re-arrested and brought back to Nigeria to face trial. His lawyers, however, insist his arrest was illegal, describing it as extra-rendition. Well meaning Nigerians have called for unconditional release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu believed to be key to the restoration of peace in East Nigeria.
