NBTE releases guidelines for implementation of unbundled HND Mass Communication programme in polytechnics

The National Board For Technical Education  (NBTE) has unveiled guidelines and procedures for the take off of the newly unbundled HND Mass Communication programme.

Accordingly, the HND Mass Communication in Polytechnics and Monotechnics will cease to exist and run in specialised areas effective 2023/2024 session..

This was disclosed in a recent letter signed by the Executive Secretary of the National Board for Technical Education, Prof Idris Bugaje, addressed to all Polytechnics and Monotechnics nationwide.

Recall that the NBTE recently announced unbundling the Higher Education Diploma course in Mass Communication.

IMPLEMENTATION GUIDELINES FOR THE UNBUNDLED HND MASS COMMUNICATION PROGRAMMMES

Following the successful completion of the development of curricula for HND Mass Communication with specializations in: Journalism and Media Production; Strategic Communication and Media Studies; and Film and Multimedia Production, I write to Inform you of the guidelines to be followed to conclude the implementation of the unbundling of Mass Communication:

2. All Institutions currently running HND Mess Communication programme are granted waiver to mount only one out of the three (3) programme specializations without Resource Inspection visitation. Howevcr; the number of stream(s) earlier approved for the HND Mass Communicatioyj programme shall be maintained for any of the new programme specialization that is selected to be Offered by the Institution.

3 For any Institution currently running a single stream for HND Mass Communication and proposes to mount another new programme Specialization(s), the Institution shall apply to the Board in writing and complete and submit the Self Study Questionnaires (SSQs) for assessment.

4. Approval to visit Institution to mount addiuonal programme specializatiohs shall depend on the enrollment ratio of the institution that must ave satisfied the 70:30 ratio in favour of teehn010U based programmes.

5. Furthermore, any Institution that currently has more thatn one stream of HND Mass Communication programme and intends to run more than one programme specialization should seek the approval of the Board as well as allocation of nurnber of streams to each programme specialization approved for the institution.

6. Each of these programme specializations are distinct and shall be treated as separate programmes.

 Institutions currently not running HND Mass Communication programme, but intends to mcunt any of the new programme specializations will have to follow the Programmes Approval process of the Board. Please, see the guidelines for establishing new programmes in Polytechnics and similar Tertiary Institutions in Nigeria on NBTE website Sww.nbte.gov.ng) for ease of reference.

8. All Institutions currently running HND Mass Communication programme are expected to stop further admission into the programme with effect from 2023/2024 academic session. Institutions should fully migrate or transit from the current practice to the new programme specialization(s).

9. All fresh requests to offer HND Mass Communication programme will be evaluated by the Board based on the requirements of these new programme specializations.
