The Anambra State Police Command says it recovered 11 stolen vehicles, arrested 12 kidnap suspects, nine armed robbery suspects, six cult members and three suspected insurgents between December 2023 and January 2024.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Aderemi Adeoye, who disclosed this at a news conference, said 12 firearms were also recovered from different encounters with men of the underworld.
He said 40 rounds of ammunition or cartridges were recovered too within the period under review. That there were also other interdictions the police made which helped greatly to preventing insurgents from unleashing mayhem on Anambra citizens.
CP Adeoye further disclosed that the police at Inland Town Onitsha got information about a stolen vehicle at Omaba phase 2 Onitsha. That when they got there, they saw a Toyota Camry car that was seemingly abandoned because it was not possible to start the vehicle.
He said police in the area then laid ambush until about 11pm in the night when two men came around to pick the vehicle and they were arrested. Adeoye noted that the car snatchers came with another Toyota Camry car which was discovered to have been stolen from where it was parked.
Although the CP also alluded to the incident that occurred at Uga on 28th December, 2023 where two police officers from Enugu State Police Command who were on escort duty were killed by suspected kidnap gang in a bid to stop the hoodlums from abducting innocent citizens in their Christmas mood; the CP informed that the daredevils were later trailed to Ogboji in Orumba-South where police operatives engaged them in a gun battle and neutralised three members of the kidnap gang even as he revealed too that two police officers sustained severe bullet wounds; that one of the injured officers had a brain surgery where an AK47 bullet was removed from his head.
Adeoye however noted that in spite of the challenges, Anambra citizens had a peaceful and wonderful Christmas and New Year celebrations. He said that the new year has started on a very good note amidst heavy traffic gridlocks which portrayed the fact that there were massive homecomings during the Yuletide season and Ndi-Anambra had swell time in their respective communities.
