Soludo commissions Oko community civic centre named after former Vice President, Dr Alex Ekwueme

* Gov. urges Oko community to shun activities capable of causing erosion

The governor of Anambra State, Prof. Chukwuma Charles Soludo has commissioned the Alex Ekwueme Civic Centre  built in  honour of the former Vice President of Nigeria, Chief Dr. Alex Ifeanyichukwu Ekwueme.

While commissioning the building,  Governor Soludo praised Dr. Ekwueme’s contributions towards the development of Oko community 
and thanked the people of Oko for the honour done to  the former vice-president. He described Dr Alex Ekwueme as  a man who is not just a father of Oko and Old Aguata Union (OAU) but Anambra, Nigeria and Africa.
 
Soludo described Dr. Ekwueme (Ide Aguata) as an idea and an institution which  will never die, stating that Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones concept was Dr. Ekwueme’s idea.

The governor commended the Ide Memorial Group and called for immortalization of late Chief Alex Ekwueme's core values and aspiration among which is a vocational center and reconstruction of the Oko General Hospital.The governor charged the people of Oko to shun activities capable of bringing erosion to the town.

Gov. Soludo restated that sand mining and uncontrolled flooding remain key contributors to erosion in Oko. He added that dealing with the problem requires a collective action from the community, individuals, and the government. Soludo stated that a government task  will  enforce ban on sand mining, and announced severe penalties for defaulters. 
 
Gov. Soludo pledged to construct crucial roads, including the Oko-Ogboji-Aguluezechukwu road with a spur to the Civic Centre as well as  the Oko-Ndiowu road as well as the Pal Breweries road.

In his speech,  Chairman, Oko Peoples Union, Comrade Luke Nweke expressed gratitude to the community over the completion of the civic centre and thanked the Governor Soludo’s support in combating the erosion in the community.
 
Special guest of honour was Governor Anambra state  Prof. Charles Soludo. The chairman of the occasional was Chief Sir Ben Okoye (Onwa Nnewi). Chairman Local Organising Committee was Barr. Handel Okoli (Chibuko Oko).The Royal Father was Igwe Prof. Laz Ekwueme (Igwe Ijikala 11 Oko).
