Cody Rhodes on Saturday at WWE Backlash in Puerto Rico defeated Brock Lesnar.  Cody Rhodes had lost to Roman Reigns in the main event of WrestleMania 39 last month, in a controverial win.

Cody Rhodes gave Lesanar a surprise attack in an attemp to subdue his ahead of the bell.

Cody Rhodes who frequently performs a springboard Cody Cutter from the corner in matches, and tried enforcing it to no avail. Lesner also inflicted his F5 as well as  suplex against Rhodes.

In the match, Lesnar hit his head open in an exposed corner turnbuckle, causing profuse bleeding. Rhodes had inadvertently ripped the turnbuckle open as he was dragged by Lesner. The Beast himself looked wryly at the turnbuckle, and indication he could put it to use.

Lesnar kicked out of the crossroads and applied a kimura. Rhodes, tactful, shifted his weight, pinning Lesnar’s shoulders on the floor for a successful  three count, while still trapped in the kimura.

Lesnar appeared  in control, when he put Rhodes in the kimura lock, but The American Nightmare countered by rolling on top of Lesnar to earn al the pin.

Lesnar was sitting up enraged and stunned, while Rhodes celebrated outside the ring. It's possible that Lesner, who was stunned by the win, to shop for second match between him and Rhodes.

Cody Rhodes story

Some WWE fans wonder what the Cody Rhodes story is all about.

In a report by sportskeeda, titled  "I gotta finish the story," Cody Rhodes explains his story and  details real reason why he wants to dethrone Roman Reigns at WrestleMania 39.

In that report, American Nightmare stated that it's his quest to win the WWE Championship and that he would love to do so by winning the title currently held by The Tribal Chief.

"I gotta finish the story. For those who don't know, 1978, my dad won the WWE title, but it was by over the top rope or disqualification is how he won the match. He put the belt on, big pantomime, the crowd's excited, but then they took it away. So you won the match but the champion got to keep the title, that's mentioned on RAW, so it's a real story."

He went on to say:

"I had that picture and that was my first dream ever, like, I'm gonna get it to him. I have the belt too, the original one. I showed it to Vince when we had our first meeting but as much as that belt is special, what Roman has is it."

Cody Rhodes, Roman Reigns WrestleMania 39

At SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, Sunday night, Zayn and Owens succeeded and retrieved the tag championships from VCThe Usos on Night 1. Cody Rhodes was the anticipated  right  opponent to complete the task on night 2, but he failed, as he was apparently  cheated out by Roman Reigns, courtesy of mainly  Solo Sikoa.

Cordy Rhodes efficiently  delivered his finishing moves--  the Cross Rhodes, twice. Solo Sikoa somehow in disguise, sneaked his way back in, unleashed the Samoan Spike and effectively halting Rhodes vantage point  to end an era in the WWE Undisputed Universal Championship. Roman Reigns escaped from his grips, survived, and speared Rhodes to earn a controversial winning.

Cordy was expected to finish his story by defeating Roman in honour of his father the late great Dusty Rhodes. Indeed, there were indications that many felt the match had the wrong ending.

Rhodes returned to WWE at last year's WrestleMania and won the 2023 Royal Rumble.

Roman Reigns' empire nearly failed in the hands of Rhodes at WrestleMania 39.

Now Rhodes has put the Lesner out of his way, another title match against Reigns may be around the corner, at least, for the sake of the unfinished Cordy Rhodes story.
