The Anambra State Command has stated that the killings in the Ifite community of Awka South Local Government Area Anambra State were not targeted at any ethnic group.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said in a statement on Friday that it is regrettable that some individuals are posting videos on social media alleging that the violence was aimed at a particular ethnic group.

According to him, preliminary information revealed that the armed men began shooting sporadically in an attempt to escape when police were alerted to their actions in the area.

The statement reads:

“On 25/10/2024, the Anambra State Police Command intercepted a protest video regarding the unfortunate incident that occurred in Ifite Awka on 24/10/2024, which recorded the murder of five individuals and left three others seriously injured. We wish to clarify that this incident is not targeted at any ethnic or religious group.

To set the record straight, preliminary information indicates that the armed men started shooting sporadically as they attempted to flee when police were alerted to their intentions.

The Command, while not wishing to engage in disputes with any individual or group, remains committed to ongoing operational patrols, enhanced security measures, and surveillance aimed at ensuring safety and preventing such incidents in the state.

While we extend our condolences to the families and friends of the victims, we assure the public that, unlike previous incidents, some of the individuals involved have been arrested, and justice will be served. We will not rest until the perpetrators of this heinous crime are brought to justice,” he added.
