On November 28, 2024, I hosted the Orumba North Local Government Area's annual security summit at the local government secretariat in Ajalli. The focus of the summit was to address the pressing issue of insecurity in Orumba North. The event was graced by the presence of the Anambra State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Nneghe Obono Itam.
In my welcome address, I commended the Commissioner of Police for his tireless efforts in combating crime and insecurity throughout the state. I highlighted the urgent need for increased support from the state government to bolster security in Orumba North. Specifically, I requested the provision of adequate manpower, mobility, and resources to equip the poorly equipped police stations in the local government area.
I emphasized that the lack of resources is a major deterrent for police officers, leading to a shortage of personnel in the region. We must empower our police officers with the tools they need to effectively respond to crime and protect lives and property. This includes providing them with modern equipment, vehicles, and sufficient manpower.
Hon. Uche Ogbonna (Atụanyanna), a former House of Assembly member representing Orumba North, also addressed the summit. He called for enhanced collaboration between the police force and the Anambra State Vigilante Service Agents, stressing the importance of a unified front in combating insecurity.
Commissioner Itam acknowledged the challenges faced by the police in Orumba North and assured the community of his commitment to improving security in the area. He emphasized the need for active community participation in identifying and apprehending criminals. "We cannot combat crime alone," Commissioner Itam stated. "We need the cooperation of the local government and the community to identify and apprehend criminals. These unknown gunmen are not strangers, and we need the courage of our people to expose them.
The Commissioner also announced that recruitment and training for new police officers will soon commence, further strengthening the police force's capacity to address the security challenges in Orumba North.
