Evangelist Obi of Zion Prayer Movement Outreach, Lagos has called for the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu currently held by the DSS.

Evangelist Obi made the appeal when he received Senator Osita Izunasor of Orlu Senatorial District, Imo State during his birthday ceremony in Lagos on Sunday .

The prophet asserted that the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu will go a long in ensuring that peace returns in southeast, especially the Orlu Senatorial District, the constituency of the prophet.

Evangelist Obi stated that the only birthday gift he wants from the governor of Imo State and Senator Izunasor is the release of the IPOB leader.

Evangelist Obi regretted that many successful Igbos have relocated to Asaba Delta State, adding that such a situation does not encourage the development of southeast states.

Evangelist Obi said, "I am coming from the angle of peace, I know his release will bring peace to Igbo."

Senator Izunaso in response said that he had earlier moved a motion on the floor of the Senator demanding the release of Kanu. However, he promised to make fresh moves aimed at freeing Mazi Kanu.

Background and Kanu's first  arrest

Kanu was arrested first  on October 14, 2015 on 11-count charge bordering on terrorism. He was later  granted  bail after two years detention in Abuja prison. He  was first arraigned on December 23, 2015, but he was later granted bail on April 25, 2017.

Kanu  disappeared in 2017 when  his home was attacked in 2017 apparently for fear of his life. Many people were said to have died in that operation. Mr Kanu was widely reported to have fled the country in September 2017 after an invasion of his home by the military in Afara-Ukwu, near Umuahia, Abia State. There are reports of unconfirmed number of civilians who lost their lives in that attack.

The Nigerian government obtained a court order on September 20, 2017, to designate IPOB a terrorist group and to proscribe it.

The rearrest

The leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, was re-arrested and brought back to Nigeria to face his trial, Nigeria’s Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami revealed in Abuja. His lawyers, however, say his arrest was illegal, describing it as extra-rendition.

At a joint press briefing on Tuesday with the State Security Service (SSS) in Abuja, Mr Malami disclosed that "international collaborative efforts with security agencies led to Mr Kanu’s arrest and repatriation to Nigeria. His lawyers has, however, challenged his abduction as unlawful rendition.

Court of Appeal freed Nnamdi Kanu, declared his  abduction Illegal

The Court of Appeal sitting in Abuja Thursday declared as illegal and unlawful, the abduction Kanu from Kenya to Nigeria and and  consequently freed him of his charges.

The Appellate Court held that the Federal Government breached all local and international laws in the forceful rendition of Kanu to Nigeria thereby making the terrorism charges against him incompetent and unlawful

The Court quashed all the charges against Nnamdi Kanu The Appeal  Court in a judgment voided and set aside the charges by the Federal Government against Kanu. The Appeal Court consequently discharged Kanu from the alleged offences.

Nnamdi Kanu is the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra. Kanu had in an appeal dated April 29 and marked CA/ABJ/CR/625/2022 applied to be discharged and acquitted of all charges brought against him by the Federal Government.

In a decision by a three-man panel led by Justice Jummai Hanatu, the Appeal Court held it was satisfied that Federal Government flagrantly violated the law, when it forcefully renditioned Kanu from Kenya to Nigeria.

The court held that such extra-ordinary rendition, bereft of the due process of the law, was a gross violation of all international conventions, protocols and guidelines that Nigeria is signatory to. The court also held that the arrest was a breach of appellant's fundamental human rights.
